The Deaf Institute is one of Manchester’s most distinctive live music venues, set inside a Grade II-listed Victorian building on Grosvenor Street near the universities. Spread across three floors — the ground-floor Cafe Bar, basement Lodge, and top-floor Music Hall — it’s been a fixture of the city’s gig calendar since 2008.
The Music Hall is the main draw: a dome-shaped, red-brick room with staggering acoustics, a proper stage, full PA and lighting, and one of the biggest mirrorballs in the country. Capacity sits at 260 for seated/standing live shows, expanding to around 500 for club nights. The Lodge offers a smaller, more intimate room for emerging acts and one-off bookings.
The Deaf Institute books a broad range of indie, rock, electronic, alternative and touring international acts, with regular student nights and LGBTQ+ programming alongside the main calendar. There’s also a long-running Sunday open mic.
